I want to become a CNA. I am a prior EMT-B of 3 years. Do you think I could pass the exam without a class ?

I was an Emergency Medical Technician for 3 years. I want to become a CNA. My opinion is, since I know about the medical field and I am very booksmart, I think if I purchase a CNA study book then take the state test, I think I should be able to pass it. Anyone agree or disagree on that?

The CNA test is supposely easy. I just don't see paying $300 to $1000+ to take a class when I could probably ace the test.

It depends on the state - most let you test out without taking the class.

I never worked in the medical field, didn't take the class, and took the test for the CNA and passed before going to nursing school for my RN. It doesn't take a genius.

But you will want to be familiar with the tested material. My state's board of nursing website contained a pdf file you could download of the entire CNA testing brochure that contained all the skills that you could be tested on during the practical exam, and listed how to perform them correctly, step by step, and which elements were critical to perform correctly or else you would immediately fail the skill. It also included a sample exam for the written portion - very helpful! It was almost as good as taking the class, because it told me everything I needed to know.

Contact your state nursing board or health department to see if they have a similar packet of info. Good luck! Source(s): RN
The problem is...you CAN'T take the exam without completing a class.

Check with a community college....what you have listed as $1300 sounds like it's from some scamming junior college.

It's a 6-week program, all day long.
I have been a CNA for 15 years. Are you sure that is something you really want to do? It can be so tiring and stressful. Anyway, you could easily pass the test, but in MI, you have to show proof of the class taken before you are allowed to take the test. Most community colleges have this course and it only takes about a month. Good luck!
Unfortunately, you need to take the course to be able to sit for the test.

It's not hard to become a CNA, but there are skills that you will need to practice before you can apply them to patients. They aren't difficult skills, but neither are EMT-B skills, and I'm sure you remember the loads of skills practice you had to do in class to pass EMT-B :)

There's a world of difference between the EMT-B training, and CNA training. One, is obviously focused on the immediate pre-hospital needs of the patient (stabilize and transport). The other concentrates on long term care and management of chronic illness. There is some overlap, but not enough to get you out of taking the course.

Booksmarts are great, but they don't make up for hands-on skills practice. I can sympathize; I hate taking classes that I feel are unnecessary, as I can pass most tests by just simply reading the relevant material. In this case, however, the class is necessary.

Hope this helps :)
yep, just order a degree from the national enquirer.
