What does a "unit secretary/Monitor tech" do? |
What does a "unit secretary/Monitor tech" do? I am the Unit Secretary/Clinical Assistant for the Pre-op area at an Outpatient Surgery Center. It seems that I never know what I am in for. I am constantly having to communicate with a slew of people whether I want to or not, I don鈥檛 know who is going to bite my head off for making a mistake, what surgeon is going to have his drawers in a wad, which nurse is hot-flashing that day and is going to tattle on me, or what my boss is going to throw at me next. I have to know the difference between surgical procedures like 鈥榤yringotomy with tubes bilateral鈥? 鈥榮alpingo-oophorectomy with LAVH hysterectomy鈥?鈥榬epair distal radius ORIF left鈥?and how long each surgery will take. I have 10 or 15 different people coming at me saying 鈥渨e are out of this鈥? or 鈥渨e are out of that鈥?(it is my job to order nourishments for the patients, order office supplies, order medical supplies, order forms for the charts, batteries, bags and the list goes on and on.) And while all this is going on I am having to answer the phone, communicate with the front desk, call patients back to the pre-op holding bays, keep up with when the nurses have to give the 鈥渇eel good鈥?medicine you get before surgery, let the anesthesiologist know what鈥檚 going on with the nurses so he can do his thing, order lab work on the computer, draw blood, take blood to the lab at the main hospital, do EKGs, get vital signs. And then I STILL have to keep up with the schedule and if a patient is late, I have to call them and find out why, because if the patient is late, it ends up being my fault somehow. And this is for about 6 or 7 surgeons. If something tears up, breaks down, leaks, malfunctions, or blows up they all come to me. I have to know who to call to get it fixed. I am a CMA basically doing 2 jobs. Needless to say, I am looking for employment elsewhere. Source(s): My lousy job Unit secretaries have an array of responsibilites... putting in dr's orders, making charts, answering phones, etc. A monitor tech usually works on a telemetry floor and monitors the computer screens and informs the RN of any significant changes.
