Am I crazy to quit my job? |
I currently work at a job making a little over 54K a year and I really want to quit to go back and get my nursing degree. I wanted to be a nurse but got a job with a good company and I have now been here for 8 years and worked my way from the botton. I have a 1 year old son and I would like to finish my degree and be able to be at home more with him than I am now. I worry about how the bills will get paid if I do this but my husband will support me no matter what decision I make. I am the bread winner in the family so we would probably have to sale our house and move in with family or somewhere cheaper. This is a difficult decision and you have to weigh up what is more important for you and what will make you more happy. Yes, you are earning a lot of money but are you getting job satisfaction? Do you come home at the end of the day and feel pleased that you have done something worthwhile? That you have made a real difference? Do you feel fulfilled? I have been a nurse for 2 years and most days I come home feeling totally exhausted, I dont have any spare cash at the end of the month and I feel constantly challenged by the work that I do... but would I do anything different? Definitely not. I think nursing is the most rewarding and satisfying job there is, you have the ability to change peoples lives for the better. You can help people cope with stressful times in their lives, give them support, be a shoulder to cry on, get them back on their feet, make them feel better, give them independance and make their pain go away. No other job can offer so much. It is fast moving so you never get bored, no two days are the same, you have to be constantly on the ball and have to think very 3 dimensionally and at times be quite creative. The money will obviously not be anything like you are used to but if you are willing to make sacrifices then it should not put you off. There are lots of things you could consider, perhaps renting out your house to cover the mortgage and renting somewhere smaller for yourself for a while until you start earning better money. Or sell your house to one of these companies that buy your house and rent it back to you with the option of you buying it back at a later date. That way you get to stay in your home but without the mortgage. Look at what benefits you would be eligible for, housing benefit, working families and child tax credits, bursary, grants, childcare allowances, that sort of thing. Things might be tough for a while but if you have your heart set on nursing you should go for it. You dont want to regret it later on in life when you are too old to consider it. It is great that you have the support of your husband, you are very lucky, good luck in whatever you decide to do! Can't you go to school part time for now? Maybe save some money up so it won't be so stressful on the family? Go to school for a wile part time. If there is a community college anywhere near you, they cater really well to the needs of mothers who are working. thats really only a decision you and your hubby can make. Good to know he will support you though, he's a keeper lol. As an option, find out if the company you work for will assist you in your part time schooling. A lot of companies are more than willing to do this since it would boost your knowledge in the field and allow them to place you at even higher jobs (which are also higher paying). Best of luck! You'd better really think this through and be sure of your plan before you quit. Make up a budget, don't plan on living with relatives for a long period, two families in one household gets old fast. Make sure you can live on what your husband makes. Also, have you considered going to nursing part time and get a part time job? Trust me,don't quit it.I just quit my job and now I'm having a bitc* of a time finding a new one.I'm going to school this fall, but I don't have any kids to support,so don't quit it for ur kids sake.Could u go to night school part time or something for now?Thats the only suggesstion I have for u right now. So what kind of nursing is going to give you more time with the family? Most nurses I know work a lot of hours because of the shortage of nurses. If that is what you want then take the expense cutting steps and save money up front. Then go to school. |
