It can sure feel rewarding when you help someone who is injured. Can you handle the sight of blood and vomit? You will meet people that are having a bad day, care and transport the sick and dying, smell things that are sometimes foul. Here in San Francisco we make more than most companies. Starting EMT wage is $13 an hour and $17 as a Paramedic. It only takes a semester of school. I was a bike messenger for 15 years until I decided to try emergency medicine. After 6 years, I'm now a Paramedic making a whopping $21 bucks an hour! Paramedic school is 1 1/2 - 2 years and it's no joke. Don't attempt Paramedic school without some experience (at least 1 year). Don't take the EMT route if you are looking to get rich, however, some EMT's eventually become RN's and sometimes even doctors. Good luck in your career choise. Well to start off go to your locan community college and see if they offer the EMT course. Most of them do, sign up and take the course. U have to pass several test or they will drop you out of the class, for exaple cpr, etc. They will train you so you should have a problem. After you finish the course you should look to get your foot in the door, it takes a while as a rokie but you should find something depending on what city you live in. To give you a better chance take EMT2and then the actual parmedic class. The pay is good btw Good career if you like the work involved; but low pay.
