I want to be a nurse, but I have a weak stomach?

Is it possible to overcome my weak stomach? I really want to be a nurse, and I'm currently taking prerequisite courses. Is there anybody out there who has become a nurse despite having a weak stomach? I know that I'll have to deal with a lot of blood, feces, urine, and vomit sometimes. Is it just mind over matter.

You can get desensitized to it pretty quickly so don't let it discourage you. You'd be surprised how you can block certain things out when you have to be the caretaker.
You do get used to it the more you are exposed to it. And a lot has to do with your attitude. If you go into a room expecting to become sick and telling yourself you can't do it, you're setting yourself up for failure. The power of positive thinking, having confidence in yourself can really make a huge difference.

But I won't lie, there are still moments when I have problems. I am a labor nurse, and deal with a lot of mess, and sometimes the smells of fecal matter still cause me to gag pretty bad. I just try not to let the patient see, and I excuse myself from the room for a moment to get control if I have to.

You'll be just fine. Don't worry about it. Good luck!

Maybe once you become a nurse these things will bother you less and less. You just have to know that you can be strong enough to overcome these things to pursue your goal.
There is an indescribable difference between watching and doing. It simply can't be put into words. Early in my career I had my first surgical rotation and had to assist with a hand surgery. The lady had her hand caught in a bowl cake mixer. I was observing, then just holding skin. Not enough to be "doing", and I got all queasy and had to go sit in the hall. A nurse came over and sat with me (one of those things you never forget) and had a long talk with me. She explained that everyone to one degree or another, has that same response. She went on to say that once I am actually "doing" it, I would be fine. I had my doubts, but I went on. She was absolutely right, and every chance I have now, I pass on her words. I just wish I knew who she was to go back and thank her.

If you have the desire. You will overcome the queasy stomach. And keep in mind that, although you will encounter blood, feces, urine, and vomit...there is a lot more to the job. The country need a lot more nurses. You are in great demand. Good luck and thanks.
Two of my best frieinds are nurses and they say that you get used to it after a while. I know a few people in medical field, and it just becomes like any other job. I am sure that if you keep focused and are exposed to it more it will get easier :)
