Hospice Nurse?

Is anyone a Hospice nurse? How do you become one? Is there a lot of counseling involved? Just some other information would be helpful!!I enjoy counseling people and being there for the bereaved(found this out after a lot of deaths around me at a young age(21).) Thanks so much, and Hospice nurses do a tremendous service I do know that much!!God bless!

I'm really sorry that you've had to deal with so much grief and loss and at such a young age. I'm not a nurse myself, but I believe that to work as a hospice nurse, that one would need their RN (registered nurse) licensure. Perhaps even LPN (licensed practical nurse)? As you are probably aware, there is a whole treatment team for the patient with a terminal illness which typically includes a clergyperson, social worker, registered nurse, home health aide, physician for palliative (pain) care and hospice volunteer.

I would suggest looking into work as a hospice volunteer providing companionship to the patient as well as (if patient is at home) respite care for the families. I'm sure that there is quite a bit of emotional support needed not only the patient but the family. Some hospice volunteers though actually go to a nursing home/long-term care facility to visit with patients and don't really deal with the family a lot but may offer condolences if or when the patient does pass away. Volunteering would be a great way to see if you feel comfortable in that area of nursing. Good luck to you. You sound like a special person!

Here is a website for volunteer positions which may include one at a local hospice organization: www.volunteermatch.org and can type in one's zip code and the volunteer area of interest. Source(s): US colleges and universities: www.utexas.edu/world/univ

For general career info -- US occupational outlook handbook: www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search 'registered nurse' or 'licensed practical nurse' or such.
