I just graduated from college and I want to go into a health career. Can anyone give me advice? |
I just graduated with a Bachelors degree in Psychology. I went all through college thinking I had my career all planned out but as soon as I graduated my career plans changed and now I cant figure out what I want to do. I know what im interested in but trying to find a career that will allow me to incorporate all my interests I am finding to be quite difficult. I would love to do something related to health and make a difference in somebody's life. I believe in disease prevention, health promotion and basically educating people to live healthy and change their unhealthy behaviors. I like helping others and caring for people. If anyone has any advice or ideas about careers that will let me be able to do all these things please feel free to tell me! I am desperate. I have looked at a dozen careers and nothing I have found appeal to me. I dont want to get my phd but would get a MA if needed for the career. Thank you for your help and advice! How about the public health field since it sounds as though you have a passion for disease prevention and community education. I'm not sure if it's mandatory that one gets a master's degree in public health (MPH), but perhaps you can find out how to get involved within your community through a non-profit organization such as your local municipal building which typically has those departments on-site. Perhaps you can also look into a degree (typically master's) in dietetics to become a registered dietician (RD) and just fyi, the program should be accredited by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Regarding 'finding one's calling in life', Farrah Gray, a young male millionaire/entrepreneur who wrote the book "Reallionaire" has said to ask oneself this question, "What would I do for years and years to come and not get paid?" Perhaps that can help you steer in the right direction. For general career info: US occupational outlook handbook www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search 'health educator' (though looked and very short entry as another name may be more detailed), 'registered dietician' or whichever other field piques one's interest. For the ADA: www.eatright.org And for US colleges and uni's: www.utexas.edu/world/univ American Public Health Association: www.apha.org American Association for Health Education: www.aahperd.org/aahe/ |
