I need help with choosing a career in either Pharmacy Tech or Medical Assistant? |
I am interested in becoming either a pharmacy tech or a medical assistant. Although I know that neither field pays much money it does not matter at all to me. I just want a career that I am going to be happy with. Please tell me which is a better field between the two? medical assistant deals with illness, germs, bodily fluids , 1:1 contact with people...etc pharmacy tech deals with drugs, insurances, less contact with people...etc you need to decide if you are ok with disease, illness or not I am a medical assistant. I would not recommend it to anyone that is very sensitive. Doctors and nurses (your superiors) are mean, demanding, rude, and treat you like a peon. I dont know how it is in the pharmacy, but I am willing to bet a pharmacist is not as egotisitcal as docs and nurses. I've heard here and on other boards that there are not too many jobs for medical assistants (including medical billers and coder, and coders need a lot of experience along with certification) these days. I'm not sure about the pharmacy tech, but I did read on another entry that that that field is saturated as well. If you do decide to go for training for one of them, please go to a lesser expensive school such as thru the local community college (perhaps non-credit course) or county vo-tech school so that at least one won't be so in debt and struggling while looking for a job. For general career info -- US occupational outlook handbook: www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search 'medical assistant', 'pharmacy technician' or whatever other career piques one's interest. |
