Any advice for a nursing major? |
So after two years of prerequisites (Microbiology, Chemistry, A&P, English, etc...) I got accepted into the Nursing Program at my college, my advisor told me I was in the top 25% of applicants. My question is how hard a major is nursing and what should I expect? Any tips would be great. Thanks Hopefully you have most of your general education requirements (not just your nursing pre-reqs) done. Nursing school is much easier if you can focus only on the nursing courses. 6 credits feels like 12. Naturally everyone has a different experience. I love school, and am a very hard worker, and I didn't find it to be hard to manage. I was organized; the more organized you are, the better off you'll be. Don't procrastinate, get work done early if you can. Clinicals are easy - basically you do a lot of observing, but yes, you do many nursing assistant-like tasks, taking vital signs, helping patients with activities of daily living like bathing, toileting, etc. But you will still be doing these things as a nurse - don't assume once you have your RN license in hand that you'll never wipe another butt again, because you will. If you've done this well up to this point, there is no reason to believe that you'll struggle in nursing courses. Nursing courses are no harder than college biology and chem courses, in fact, many nursing courses are a piece of cake. Others will take more time, like pathophysiology (think an expanded A&P with disease processes). And I do not believe as the previous answer stated that you need to continue to get a master's degree. In the future, there is going to be such a nursing shortage that hospitals will not be able to afford being picky and holding out for MSN grads. A BSN is totally adequate. Good luck, and congrats! Change majors.. In your last year of school, you will intern and that mean cleaning bed pans..plus before you become a RN, guess what tons of bed pans to be cleaned...Nursing is gr8 career, but it sure does suck in the begining. It is not hard, but you must study a lot... Be prepared to have no life for a while, and expect to go back for your Masters degree you will need it in the future I'm a RN advanced practice |
