I want to be a family doctor (physician), will I be able to work whenever hours I choose? |
And are night clinics a good idea? I prefer night. 8-10 hours a day. Also, Maybe Saturday, but no Sundays! it depends on whether you are working alone in your own office where you set the times or in a practice with other doctors that already has a set schedule, and yes, a night time clinic is a good idea for working people and college kids........ Maybe , after your intern and resident years (nite shift time there) . I would guess about age 40 , that could happen . > IF YOU HAVE HOSPITAL RIGHTS, YOU MUST ROUND ON YOUR PATIENTS DAILY, BUT THERE ARE USUALLY PARTNERS IN MEDICAL PRACTICES THESE DAYS AND YOU ROTATE WEEKEND/NIGHT DUTY. IF YOU WANT TO WORK NIGHTS, MAYBE YOU DON'T NEED A PRACTICE, YOU CAN BE HIRED BY A HOSPITAL AND RECIEVE UNASSIGNED PATIENTS THAT COME IN THROUGH THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I think as a doctor, as long as you don't care about making big bucks more than helping people, you can work whenever and wherever you like. I think emergency clinics are always looking for evening shift doctors, and it's often easier for working people to visit a Dr. in the evening. NO WAY do Dr's get to pick and choose their hours. They are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, no holidays. You can plan on "not scheduling" any work, but if you have a patient who gets sick, in an accident, heart attack, in the ER...you get a call, you have to go!! Most family practitioners work during the hours that mothers are likely to be taking their kids to the clinic...not midnight - 3am, unless mommy is a stripper or a drug addict or both. You might want to think out this career choice a bit more thoroughly before you start taking college courses. YES |
