What are some of the things you need to consider when planning work tasks in nursing homes?
I would start the shift by spending the first 10 minutes or so just doing an overall walk around and check, make sure there are no appointments, residents outings etc that will interrupt your day. Then make a list of all the things that must be done at a particular time, ie. drug rounds, these are the inflexible things that are set in stone. Then make a list of all the things that must be done either in the morning or the afternoon, ie. dressing changes, catheter changes. Then make a list of things that dont matter whether they are done morning or afternoon, these tasks can be slotted in as and when you have the opportunity. Finally make a list of all the jobs that really are not crucial and can be left to the next shift if time runs out, non critical jobs, ie. arranging curtains to be changed, looking at staff training dates. Its all about prioritising work and making sure the tasks are done in order of importance.

RN First you need t know the regulations in your state for nursing home care. Next you need to know what needs to be done and in what order. You also need to know patient/staff ratio, how long each task takes and plan for 100 interruptions on top of that. Did that help?
