What skills do you need to be a Medical biller and Coder& is this a fun, good paying job?

I am thinking about going to school for this. If you do this job tell me about your experiences.

I have been a Medical Biller for over 20 years and enjoy it very much. I enjoy fighting the insurance companies when they pay a claim incorrectly or when they won't pay it and I can get them to do so and help out a patient.

I do not sit all day filling out forms as these are mostly done electronically now. I also do not code therefore I am not looking up codes all day.

Medical Billing is a constantly changing environment and I find it to be quite challenging. What works for one claim does not always work for another. One insurance company might have this set of rules while another has a totally different set.

Granted it is not for everyone. Some are more suited to it than others.

One of the primary requirements, I feel, is you MUST be able to multitask and/or switch gears farily quickly.

School is very helpful for the coding side of billing because it does help to know the body and medical terminology however, I have never thought it very helpful for the billing side. Actual experience is a much better educational tool than a class room. JMHO

PS: I make over $20 an hr. Source(s): 20+ years medical biller
i'm planning on going to school for the same thing. i don't know if i would call the job fun but i think it should be a well paying job.
a cousin i have in FL is one. She makes around 16 hourly and sometimes she can work from home.
I guess is a monotonous job, but pay si not bad and you will always have a job.
I went to school for medical assisting. The billers and coders took the exact same course, except our part was 3 months longer.

I hated billing and coding. It was boring to me. But, then, I don't like dealing with numbers and monotony.

If you think you could sit filling out forms and looking up codes all day, then I think it'd be okay. But if you are a busy body who likes to be up and moving around a lot, then I wouldn't waste your time on training.

Most vo-tech schools offer some kind of course for it.
