Vetenarian Jobs?

Growing up, i've learned how much passion I have for animals. I am considering of becoming an emergency vet surgeon as my profession. I live in new York, so does anyone know a good place to start my career after i get a degree? Any information is considered. Tell me a little bit about the job that I need to know. Like How much I would make annualy, or how long it would take to get a degree. Like i said, any information is considered. Thank you to all who respond =]

I used to work at an animal hospital that treated just about anything that could fit through the door. There were four doctors who worked at the practice, and they were very busy. Two of the doctors co-own the practice, and the other two work off a basic "commission". I don't know exactly how much they made annually, but they definitely are not standing in line for food stamps.
One of my friend's who worked there as a vet tech went off to vet school in Scotland after getting her 4-year degree at a state university. I have heard that there are only a few Veterinary Schools in North America and that they are extremely difficult to get into and very highly competitive (also expensive).
You should try to volunteer at a local Vet or Animal Shelter as the experience with animals may help you get into a vet school. Also, you say you have a passion for animals, which is absolutely essential when working in the veterinary field. You also need to be good with people, especially if you want to be an emergency vet. Lots of people consider their pets to be their children and one of the hardest parts of the job is having to deal with someone who has just been given a poor prognosis or worse, someone who has just lost their beloved pet.
Good luck with everything, I wish I would have had some better information for you...
How wonderful that you have such a passion for working with and healing animals! Veterinarians need to first take their pre-vet courses such as biology, chemistry, biochem, organic chem, physics, calculus (just as examples) before applying to an actual vet (medical) school.
