I am in 10th grade and i am thinking about becoming a nurse.? |
I have a few questions about becoming a nurse. I have very good grades, in all honors classes, 9th in my class, and i have a 4.240 gpa, but i'm not sure what classes i should take in my junior and senior year that would be good for the nursing career. Also, I was wondering what are the requirements after high school and in college and what i can do now to be prepared to beome a nurse. Lastly, i wanted to know how well nurses enjoy their jobs. I also want to get my RN and then possibly my BSC You need Chem, Biology, Physics. Also, if there is a Psychology or psychology-like class (sorry, been outta highschool for 20 yrs.). You can't do prerequisites unless your school has a program for a bridge-in to a local college. I've heard of some high-school students taking college courses (in the summer) under certain circumstances or agreement with parents/school. Check it out with your school counsellor. Nurses and physicians come from two very distinct disciplines. Our jobs are very different. A lot of people view nurses as 'too dumb to be Dr.'s'.... that's not only rude, but untrue. Physicians diagnose problems with patients. Nurses physically, psychologically and sometimes spiritually, help patients. Nurses not only wipe bums and take temperatures.... I for one, work in the I.C.U. (intensive care unit). Here, we look after very sick pts. on life-support, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Ventricular assist devices, renal dialysis machines... I mean that we potentially look after patients on SEVERAL of these machines at the same time! The work is interesting and rewarding. As a nurse, you can also get your Bachelors degree, your Masters Degree and even PhD. You can also travel-nurse locally and world-wide (Dr.'s need to take board exams all over again)... as a nurse, you have flexiblity of work (I work part-time and go to school part-time, own a car, a condo and have a dog). If you get tired of one area of work, you can move departments. Think about it... if you were a banker, you can only switch institutions. If you were a real-estate broker, ... You get the point. So, you have to decide what kind of life-style you'd like to live, cause it isn't just about the job. Last point to consider... in the next 10-15 yrs. there will be a shortage of nurses world-wide... it's starting now. The reason is because most of the 'baby-boomers' will be retiring and there are fewer people going into the area of nursing. This could be bad... or it could be good. You'd have the pick of your job and we would have more control about how much money we make. As it is, there are $thousands in recruitment and bonuses for travel/foreign nurses. Good luck. Source(s): RN for 12 years Just know that, being a nurse is a hard job. No. I'm not a nurse but I know two people who are, and I hear alot of things that turn me off the job completely.... There are 12 hours shifts (but you will get a few days off) or eight hour shift everyday. Depending where you work - hospital or old home, you'll have to bathe the old people, clean up their waste from the bed... clean the sheets... (this depends where you work!) and one has compared it to - a high paid servant. I suppose if you want to be a nurse that works in emergencies or sugery alongside doctors it will be a different case. Since none of the people that are nurses I know work in this area, I cant tell you much... take more biological classes and anatomy and classes like that zxc why a nurse, why not a doctor? i think one more step will make a big difference in u life think about it... be a doctor!! ur smart enough to be a nurse. take AP courses of Bio and anatomy, it'll be great for your requirements to enter a university. keep doing on what ur doing. =] |
