Medical Technologist??? |
i dont want to be a nurse. i dont want to be a doctor. but, im really interested in Medical Lab Science. i want to try to make a difference in peoples lifes. im a TOTAL humanitarian. would i enjoy being a medical lab tech???? This is a very interesting, challenging, and rewarding career. If you like a job that requires critical thinking skills and if you are detail-oriented and like math and science, this could be a very good job for you. It's a job that does make a difference in a patient's diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. It's very rewarding to spend hours crossmatching blood on a patient who is bleeding out and to know he survived. MTs don't have as much direct patient contact as most other types of hospital employees, but you do have some, especially if you help collect blood. Many MTs tend to be a bit introverted, prefering to work without a lot of outside distraction, which is a common occurence if you are a nurse. Many of the MT schools have closed down in the past 20-30 years, so there is quite a shortage of MTs. Many of the hospital laboratory positions are being filled by MLTs, which means MTs are often the ones who end up as lead techs or laboratory managers. So, you should take some management and accounting courses in college. One of the most valuable "management" classes I ever took was a practical parenting class! I had to learn how to read financial documents by spending a lot of time with people in the accounting office, so I wish I had taken some accounting courses in college. MTs are qualified to do so many different jobs off the bench. I spent most of my career as a laboratory director, but also was a laboratory officer in the Army Reserve. I now do some consulting. Many MTs become technical or sales reps for companies that provide equipment and test methodologies for laboratories. I've known several MTs who ended up as senior hospitals managers, including CEO. If you later decide to continue your medical education, keep in mind that the courses you take to become an MT would qualify you to apply for and enter medical school or most any other type of advanced medical training.
