Is ultrasound technician a competitive field?

Is ultrasound technician a competitive field?

Are you asking about the job outlook? Pretty much anything in the medical field is a safe bet, as there are always sick people, unfortunately.

If you are considering going into the field, be sure to go to an accredited school. If you go to a NON-accredited school, you must work in the field of ultrasound for a full year, before you can take your licensing exams. The problem is that you will have a hard time finding a job without that license. You can find a list of accredited programs at the following site. Search "diagnosic medical sonography" and your state.

"Employment of diagnostic medical ultrasound technologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012 as the population grows and ages, increasing the demand for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic technology. In addition to job openings due to growth, some job openings will arise from the need to replace ultrasound technologists who leave the occupation permanently.

Opportunities should be favorable because sonography is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to radiologic procedures, as patients seek safer treatment methods. Unlike most diagnostic imaging methods, sonography does not involve radiation, so harmful side effects and complications from repeated use are rarer for both the patient and the sonographer. Sonographic technology is expected to evolve rapidly and to spawn many new sonography procedures, such as 3D-sonography for use in obstetric and ophthalmologic diagnosis. However, high costs may limit the rate at which some promising new technologies are adopted.

Hospitals will remain the principal employer of diagnostic medical ultrasound technologists. However, employment is expected to grow more rapidly in offices of physicians and in medical and diagnostic laboratories, including diagnostic imaging centers. Health facilities such as these are expected to grow very rapidly through 2012 due to the strong shift toward outpatient care, encouraged by third-party payers and made possible by technological advances that permit more procedures to be performed outside the hospital."

Any medical field is always looking for good trained people.
Lisscal is right on. Here in AZ it is probably like most states. For you to be accepted to an ultrasound program you have to have a registered license. Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Radigraphy Tech, and I think they will let in Registered Dieticians. Some schools also will allow you in if you have a Bachelor's degree and some medical training, but that's a case by case basis. These registried degrees require anatomy/physiology, microbiology, chemistry and other science courses.

Here in AZ they are getting paid more than Registered Nurses, around 46+ per hour, which makes it lucrative for people to apply and go back to school. This makes it VERY competative. If you're young enough talk to a military recruiter, maybe they have good programs for this in the reserves, or National Guard. The military is a great place to get paid, get free tuition and great experience, no matter what the haters say.
