Is being a CNA a good job? |
I'm thinking of taking this course at the local college that lasted a couple of months that can train you to be a CNA. It costs $800 but I wanted to know is it worth the money and is there a lot of jobs out there for CNAs? Do they do things that RNs do or not? There is a high demand for CNA's. The course is worth the money, you will start working in no time! They do not do things that RN's do. CNA's generally make beds, help toilet people, help with the bathing, feeding or serving the food. Depends on where you work which exact duties you will have. It is usually a stressful job, and very fast paced. If you have any interest in going on to be an RN, taking the CNA course is a great start! Good luck. Honestly you should go ahead and get the RN. Takes a couple of years, but the difference in money is A LOT. In my town it can be a $10/hour difference, sometimes even more. While there seem to be quite a bit of jobs for the cna, it most likely is due to the job being so stressful both mentally and physically. Cna's will most likely have to deal with patients (or residents if in a nursing home setting) that are confused, agitated and combative while trying to help them get dressed, bathed and nourished. They don't do technical tasks as the LPN (licensed practical nurse) or RN do such as dispensing medications, giving injections or adminstering IV's (intravenous/drugs). Here is a website for general career info: US occupational outlook handbook www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search 'nursing assistant', 'licensed practical nurse', or 'registered nurse'. And just fyi, if you were considering going for 'medical assistant', I've heard that there are not too many jobs out there for MA's. |
