The best way is to know about Indian Income Tax is to buy a latest Income Tax ready reckoner. It will cost you around Rs.400/-. Do not believe the web sites. specially govt. web sites. They will not update properly and you will be confused.

Check out the offical income tax dept. site : http://www.incometaxindia.gov.in... there you will find most of the rules , returns foms like SARAL, Form 16 etc.

If you are looking for additional personal income tax resourses, yahoo india and rediff have sections on income tax on their portal.

For onlne income tax preparation and filing check out http://www.ezytaxes.com - is quite user friendly and easy to use. If much more extensive than the simple saral form that ET is hosting- the key ezytaxes application asks simple questions on the income etc and generates the SARAL from - i do not need to do any calcualtions !
