When hiring contractors to do work at home, do you ask for a Cerfificate of Insurance first?

Absolutely yes & also call the better business bureau & see what the have to say. You can ask for a list of references & call them. Just like you would if you were going to hire a person. There are a lot of shady contractors out there. If you really want to get some good people you can call state farm & ask them what Contractors they have on their premium service providers list. (They won't keep around people who don't do good work or who aren't on the up & up!) I work for a legitimate contractor & I can't tell you the amount of times we get called out to either finish up someone else鈥檚 work or fix it. I've heard some horrible stories over the years about other contractors! SO ALWAYS BE CAREFULL!!!
Definitely! Also check with your home owners insurance to see what would be covered under your policy. Look for a reputable contractor....sometimes...chea... isn't better!
YES!! if the contractor is not licensed, insured and bonded in your state, DON'T HIRE THEM!
plus they should be Certified an have prof like I'm a certified welder, they should have papers in what ever they do, roofing, drywalling, ect
Yes you do, to protect yourself and his workers too, in case someone is injure, and if they are not insured that will go after your insurance-beware.
ABSOLUTELY. Because if you ask for it AFTERWARDS, and they don't have it, you're SOL.

The insurance won't cover their faulty work, btw, but it WILL show you that they have Workers Comp, so if their worker gets killed falling off your roof, and his wife sues you, you have the name and policy number of the Workers Comp carrier.

Reputable contractors have insurance. Fly by night ones usually don't. As you said, it's easy, easy, easy for the contractor to give you one, be SURE the "certificate holder" lists your name and address.
