I had a house fire how long for insurance company ......? |
.....to get insurance adjustment in the areas of estimates for rebuilding and contents.....i need to start replacing contents...any idea...please serious answers only (if you need to get smart, keep it simple and quick!) OK, the insurance company should be able to give you an advance right away, for additional living expenses - aka, hotel & immediate clothes. The adjuster should be out there within three days, sooner if it's a total loss. They can't get serious about paying the claim until they have the fire marshall's report - which can take a couple weeks. If the fire is of suspicious origin, it will take a bit longer. Meanwhile, you need to contact your friends, and start making a list of the damaged items. Why your friends? See if they have photos of events in your house, showing what was there. Depending on the severity of the fire, they will show current condition, and can help you remember what was there. You can replace the most needed items immediately - just DON'T THROW AWAY ANY RUINED STUFF UNTIL THE ADJUSTER SAYS OK. He's going to compare like kind & quality - ie, you won't get paid to replace a 27 inch tv if you had a 19 inch tv. Items damaged by smoke & water are ALSO covered under the fire peril. If you have a mortgagee, any dwelling payment will have to be paid to either the contractor doing the repairs, or jointly to you and any mortgagees. If your building is a total loss, expect to receive the face value, and depending on the local codes, they may subtract demolition and debris removal costs from the check, as they may be required to send it to your local town to have the demolition done. As always, your BEST resource for your claim specific questions, and the person that should be guiding you through this process, is YOUR AGENT. This is what you pay them for. Source(s): agent, 20+ years A serious house fire claim can take months to settle - I'm not saying that this will be the case for you but it's a definite possibility. The insurance company will almost certainly appoint a Loss Adjuster to deal with the claim for them. They will be acting on behalf of the insurance company and not in your interests - you may wish to consider appointing a Loss Assessor to act on YOUR behalf to ensure you receive the fastest and highest settlement possible - you can read more here: http://www.ajcconsultants.ltd.uk... First prepare a list of everything you lost and the replacement cost of each. Present it to the company and demand payment. Don't omit anything. When I did this I got paid in a few days. The answer is this. Stop accepting verbal answers from insurance company personnel. Write a letter to them asking why they refuse to pay you based on the estimates you have? Send it by certified mail. After they get your letter they might call you. Demand that they answer you in writing. Also demand that they clearly state (in writing), the specific policy language that supports their answer. It is very important that you become a student of your fire policy and the language it uses. I know this will help some. |
