My mother is trying to get medical insurance but no one will cover her because she's overweight.is this wrong? It depends upon her health and how overweight she is. When it comes to individual coverage, Insurance companies decide who to cover and how high their premiums should be based upon the financial risk to their company. Group coverage, such as most employer sponsored insurance charges everyone in the group at set rates because the overall risk is lower. The insurance Company assumes that a High risk policy holder (who's medical costs will be higher) will be balanced out by one or more low risk policy holder (who's medical costs are likely to be lower).of course. absolutely Yes it's wrong, but unfortunately the insurance industry is really rough right now. They are VERY particular about who they insure and what they pay. If they have weight guidelines, perhaps your mom can lose a little and fit into the guidelines, get the insurance and then she'll be OK. Good luck. Whether it's wrong or not is a matter of opinion. I understand why some insurance companies feel this way, though. Morally and ethically maybe, but not from a business point of view. Keep looking though. There are probably very few people who are entirely uninsurable and it's usually people with some sort of high risk job like trapeze artist or bomb squad technician. ;) You could try offering to pay more for a deductable or more per month/year and see if they'll go for it. Provided she can afford it that is. |
