If my dependent and uninsured mother-in-law gets hospitalized, can we refuse paying her emergency room bills? You have to sign papers allowing doctors to give you medical attention. At that time you are required to sign the papers stating you will be responsible for your medical bills. If you didn't have to pay I wouldn't be $60,000 dollars in debt for my hip surgerys :( SOMEONE WILL HAVE TO PAY If your mother in law does not make that much or does not work there are programs for her. Here is a site below that will only cost your mother in law $59.95 a month for Medical benefits. If your mother in law is hospitalized than they will speak to the hospital to lower the costs. Yes - if she is taken to the ER at a public hospital, they are required to treat all patients, regardless of income or insurance status. However, in NO case should you sign any of the admission papers or accept any responsibility for her hospital bills. why would you not help someone in the hospital?? yes. you are not on the hook for her medical bills - she is. If she passes away, her estate is then on the hook for them - no one can inheirit anything until they get paid off. You can refuse all you wish however, IF you signed the paperwork stating you would take financial responsibility, then you are responsible. Continuing to refuse to pay when you have stated via your signature on the paperwork that you would accept financial responsibility could result in your going to collections. This may vary depending on where you live and your states collection laws. |
