Can I buy stocks online? Or do I need to go through my bank?

Or is there an even more complicated process

You just need to open an account with either and bank or broker company, i have with scottrade and they charge 7 $ per transaction, no matter how many share s you buy or sell...

Its really simple to buy and sell stock with them...real time.
I buy stocks online through my bank. Ameritrade, Scottrade or E-Trade are reputable online brokerage houses that are very affordable if you can't open an online account through your bank. Whatever you do, don't use a broker. They are salesmen that want you to buy and sell as much as possible, thus eating into your long term returns and lining their own pockets.
YES, YOU CAN BUY STOCKS ONLINE. YOU JUST NEED AN ONLINE BROKER LIKE AMERITRADE.
Best and cheapest route is via on line....

Checkout WWW.TDAMERITRADE.COM

Some banks have brokerage company affiliates with online trading. JP Morgan Chase is one.

But like all brokerage companies, you would have to open a brokerage account and complete all the forms.

There are many non-bank online brokers as well, several listed in other answers.
The best way to buy stocks online is through an online broker. You basiclly have two kinds of brokers. One is a full service broker. The full service brokers advises you on what to buy and sell and helps you out along the way. The are the highest as far as commissions. Then you have the discount brokers like scottrade, etrade, etc. They charge flat rate commissions and they don't offer any advice. It is up to you to do your own research.

The opening of the account is fairly simple. You just contact them and fill out the forms. Choose the one that best fits your investment knowledge and style.
