What happened to Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund today??? |
I just invested in it 3 days ago and it has been going down... what's happening? What should I do??? It looks like it will be up about 1.10% today. You can check this site at ~6:15 PM and they will usually have the day's change listed: https://flagship.vanguard.com/vgapp/hnw/... As far as what it will do next week, next month or next year I do not know. But you're 23 years old. By the time you retire it will be worth a whole lot more than it is now. Try to stomach the ups and downs and you will be amply rewarded in time. you should turn off cnbc, add some extra money to it when you can afford to, and dont look at the balance for a few years. if 3 down days in a row bother you.... and you cant stop looking at it and worrying you're better off earning 5% in a cd... stress is costly... 3 days? Stop watching it so closely. Look at it in 3 years and see what it did. Everything has been going down for the past few days on fears of interest rate changes. Today (as of about 1:30 pm eastern daylight time) The DOW, S&P 500 & NASDAQ indexes are going back up so in 20 years or more (as mutual funds should be long term holdings) you won't remember this very minor "blip." First, turn off the financial news. Second, take a deep breath. Welcome to the stock market. One of my stocks has lost around 10% over the last 2 days, but that's after more then doubling over the last year. It's a wild ride, but I would hang on even if it lost 50% because it's a great company. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index is basically the entire stock market wrapped into one mutual fund, and the market goes up and down from time to time. If the money you invested is money that you won't need for 3-5 years, don't sweat it and just buy more shares. If that IS money that you need soon, take it out immediately and give yourself a slap on the wrist for being foolish. If you can't handle a dip then you should be in bonds. You should buy more shares and hold them for at least 10 years. The fact that stocks have fallen in price only makes them safer, not riskier. You do understand that stocks are volatile, right? Otherwise, why did you buy a total stock market index fund? Download my free book on my website and read it. It will teach out about stocks and investing.
