What Are some good stocks For A 14 Year Old ?

What are some good stocks for a 14 year old to invest in ? Long Term of Short Term.. I had an idea of Dell, Apple, Google, Gateway, Intel, & Texas Insterments ? IDEAS PLEASE ?

Pretty ambitious for a 14 year old...can you afford those stocks? Tech stocks are pretty pricey at times.

For the Long term:

Just a little hint...we are in a global conflict with the rest of the crazies on this planet, something tells me that as you are growing up the Aerospace & Military sectors are going to be really busy.

Also, think about looking in to commodities...do your homework, you'll be thankful you did.

Something else to consider, now that we are in a global economy and other countries are making a play at 'super power' status - learning about foreign companies and what they offer may be a safe bet in your future too. The world is looking to go 'green' (eco-friendly) see who has a hand in that sector.

Finally, a lot of redevelopement is still taking place at home and abroad, what companies do you think are doing all that work?

I am in no way telling you what to invest in. However I am saying take the time to consider who some of the big players are or will be...

For the short term:

open up a good savings account "ING ORANGE" and let it collect interest
You should only invest in equities for the long term. Short term trading other than for expert, full time investors, is the easiest way to lose money. If you are looking for a short-term investment (less than 5 years) you will probably be better off in CDs or high interest saving accounts.

At your age, look at investing in no-load index funds like Vanguard Total Stock Market Index. Over the long term - at least 5 years - no-load indexes will always beat the market.

Avoid investing in individual stocks. You do not have the buying power to spread your risk sufficiently, so although you MIGHT just get lucky, you probably won't. Individual stocks for small investors is the same as buying lottery tickets - it's a gamble with long odds.
I like knee socks myself. Oh, you said stocks. Never mind.
you can invest in individual stocks, but i would suggest a diverified portfolio.

Here is a sample
GS-Goldman Sachs-A financial
CMG-Chipotle Mexican Grill-Restraunt
VLO-Valero-Energy
AAPL-Apple-Technology
DE-Deere-Industry

All the following picks are my opion only and should only be invested in if you have the money to lose.
No single stocks. I would go for an ETF/Index. Even though you have plenty of time there is too much risk in the single plays.

Good Luck. Great to get started young!

Rob
Very long term - McDonald's. Big multinational.
A lot of these answers are good, but also think about the things that interest you. If you like Hockey think of a Dicks Sporting Goods or a Nike where you could easily track their success. Both stocks have done extremely well as a long term investment.
