When you live abroad, to whom do you pay taxes? |
I am a US citizen planning to move abroad in the next year. I intend to move to Ireland. Once I have a job I plan to live in Ireland while renting a home. I will not own property in the US nor in Ireland. Obviously I will need to pay taxes. Do I pay income taxes to Ireland or to the US? Or to both? Are there other taxes besides income and property that I should worry about? As a US citizen, you will be subject to a tax on worldwide income unless you go through a formal expatriation procedure. As a foreign-based taxpayer, you may be entitled to exclude some or all of your foreign earned income, depending when the move was, etc. Not sure what the deal is with Ireland, but if you do pay income taxes there, you can get a tax break when you file your US return. Also, best to keep track of your moving expenses; they're deductible. id="askers-rating"> |
