The place that I work at?

I am thinking about applying for jobs at the place that I work at and also jobs outside of the place that I work. The problem is that right now we are short of help. Can my boss hold me back from leaving my current job? I didn't sign a contract or anything.

No way. You can quit any time for any reason, as long as you aren't under a contract. But dont expect a good reference!
