Can your workplace force you to work for a manager you dislike? |
When I was hired, it was for a different manager. I worked with her for almost two years. My co-worker resigned, and instead of hiring someone to replace her, they've redistributed the work, and I now have to report to her manager whom I detest with every fiber of my being. My co-worker resigned because of this manager. She is difficult, demanding and psychologically abusive. What rights do I have? What can I demand? I'm already applying for other jobs. You can ask for a transfer, or if your workplace is like mine, you can "bid" to another department (if there is an opening in one department all employees are allowed to sign a request for transfer to that job, the one with the most seniority wins the "bid"). If you don't have either of those two options you are left with two more. Either move to another company or find a way to co-exist with that manager. I work for a large corporation and over the years I've had to work for several supervisors I did not like for various reasons. I "fought back" by becoming so good at my job that these supervisors needed me and I wasn't subjected to some of the crap the others were subjected to. I am sorry to tell you this but you have no other legal recourse but to work for that manager. My best advice is to NOT tell anyone of your fellings for the present manager (he/she might make life hard for you) and try has hard has hell to get out of dodge. MBA OB/OD Sh*t rolls downhill. There isn't a thing you can demand. Put up or shut up. Yes, although you can request another position. Personally Id challenge the position change since you were hired to work under someone else. Im not sure what the laws are but I would talk to your boss, and request your original position back. If you find a better job before you can ever work this out dont quit on the spot and make a fuss, just leave your 2 week notice, you wouldnt want your new employer to find out you quit. If you employment has a "Personnel Department" you can go and speak with them. Request a transfer & request that your visit to them be "private." You can tell the Personnel Dept/Human Resources your feelings....but other than that, I don't believe you can do much about this situation. Try and give her a "new chance" and you may find that she is THRILLED to have you on her "side." It may turn out great. Good luck. Patti The company has offered you a job - you choose whether or not to accept that job. Whether the conditions of the job involve heavy travel, a nasty manager, work that doesn't interest you, or whatever, the fact is that the company has offered and you have a choice whether or not to accept. Unfortunately there is no law against nasty or even incompetent managers. |
