I'm a 21 year old shop assistant in England and my position has no key-holder or managerial responsibilities. My boss has a habit of organizing the staff's weekly rota half-arsed as he claims he's useless at it and it confuses him (there's "qualified" for you). This week I have found myself on a 6 day stretch of early and late shifts (9am-5:30pm/11:30am-8pm). I know that by law workers are required to have at least 11 hours rest between shifts but as an assistant is my situation legal? I'm only concerned because my store's staff usually get a day off every 2-3 days, including the management. A 6 day stretch for one staff member is very unusual - I want to make sure my boss isn't trying to pull a fast one hoping that it will go unquestioned - especially since he himself has already had 2 days off during my 6 day stretch. Is he doing something he shouldn't be doing or is he just being careless, because I'm pretty eager to call him out...
As long as you are getting paid it is legal. If you do not like the situation you should try to ask your boss for a more normal schedule. He/she may not realize that it bothers you to work strange shifts. |
