Paralegal or Court Reporter??? |
Please only the experienced respond: I am ready to return back to school after being a stay at home mom, I enjoy all aspects of the law anything to do with Court tv or A&E I have already seen it. My husband almost thinks that I have an obsession with the field of work, which is why I really want to work the administrative side of the law. I am sooo torn between becoming a Paralegal versus Becoming a Court Reporter. I would love to eventually get training in both fields , but for now I need training in one of the two fields that I enjoy the most. Are there any Paralegals or Court reporters that work in the field? What advice can you give me? Why would I enoy being a Paralegal over a Court reporter and vice versa? My ultimate goal is to get experience in the field and then become a contractor and work for myself, I know I can do this with either field. But I am sooo torn between the two. Please help!!! all a court reporter does is take the "notes" of the trials... he or she uses a machine and types out word for word what is said in each trial.... the pay is very good, but you don't need to know anything about the law---just how to type and use the "shorthand" that is used on the machines.... Paralegals get INTO legal cases.... they do research for the lawyers and are part of an actual legal team.... they investigate other cases that are relevant to the case at hand and prepare documents based on that research for the lawyers who are trying the case... as far as interesting professions, I truly feel that being a paralegal is the better profession.... ALSO, if you decided after becoming a PARALEGAL, that you wanted to become an actual LAWYER, you would already have gotten quite a lot of legal background being a paralegal..... I am a Paralegal and the first thing that I done when I got finish with school and you are going to need this because most firms don't want to hire a paralegal that is fresh out of school. I got up and I put my resume out there and I done work for free and I know that sounds wrong but if I did not do that work I would be still at home so when they ask you will you come in and do some side work tell them yes because experience will stay up more than your two or four year degree. |
