Is it legal to decrease my pay without forewarning? |
I work for Friendly's in Massachusetts and I was just given a $0.75 pay raise (as i've taken on more responsibility on the job) to $8.25 an hour. Suddenly this week's paycheck was 7.50 an hour (when last weeks was 8.25 an hour). There was no forewarning or reason given yet. While shady, is this legal? Is there anything I can do about it? Talk to your manager, there may simply be a payroll error in this weeks paycheck. If there is, they will pay you the difference. You can quit and any mexican will take over your job for $5.85 Did you ask why, where you work Ask if there is a mistake on your check and get an explanation from your boss. Perhaps it's just bookkeeping. . . First, don't just assume that it is "shady" -- in a situation where you recently received a raise, they may have not entered it into their software correctly. The appropriate thing to do is to take the check BACK (or if you have cashed it, the stub that indicates the amount) and ask to have it corrected. Likely they will apologize and write you a check for the difference. Have you ASKED them? Before jumping the gun and assuming that it was something shady, I would highly recommend going over the paycheck with the general manager and make sure it wasn't a simply clerical error. How long have you had the new job? Are you SURE your pay has actually taken effect yet? |
