Management consulting or patent law?

I am currently a PhD student in chemistry and am considering the above two career paths. Any suggestions what would be the benefits/drawbacks of each? Any other careers you can suggest?

Patent law is definitely more lucrative. You can bill out around $500 an hour with no end of work in sight. The downside is the hours. But, hey, put in 10 years, put money in your purse, and retire early.
Get me a pencil and pad, why don't you lay down and tell me about it!

The first prepares you for an independent position in the future, the other is more difficult to consider independence.
