When an employer does a criminal background check, are they able to see the details of the indictment?

I just applied for a job that I've been working temporary for about 6 months. I passed the drug screen however, I have a felony theft charge on my record. I didn't lie about the charge I lied about how I got the charge to keep from having to really explain what I did. Will an employers criminal background check show the reason I was charged or just the charge and probation, and date information.

I work in a recruitment agency, and all our temporary staff are required to undergo criminal history checks. To date, I have had one check come back that actually stated that they had a charge against them. It listed that the charge was for drink driving. (This was a national police clearance). I have also had another teacher who put in to get a Catholic criminal history screening done, and we were notified that he had not been cleared but they were not at liberty to explain what had shown up on their screening, due to confidentiality. I am guessing that your charge will be listed, but it won't go into details about what happened at that time. The check would be done through a database of "cover" information, not go into a long anecdotal about what happened.
Usaully, just the charge and probation. However, sometimes their are a few more details, but not enough to contidict you.
It's usually just the date, charge, and superficial information. No details.
Probably that you have a felony conviction and the dates of the conviction. Unless they pull the court transcripts they probably won't get details.

As long as you're up front about it to the employer and they were ok with it. If they find out you lied then they will not be able to trust you and therefore will disqualify you for a permanent position.
