In New York, can a person collect unemployment even if they resigned from their previous job?

I have been told that they CAN collect unemployment. Please cite a source where I can verify and further research the information. Thanks a lot.

Rarely - only if it's judged that they quit for a very good reason. And the state's definition of "good reason" is very likely different from yours. Source(s): http://www.labor.state.ny.us/ui/claimant...
You MUST be fired to collect unemployment.
I wish. I live in NY and you have to be let go in order to collect.
They have a website with all the info you need.

I live in NY and you have to be fired to collect unemployment. I think what the confusion is that there is a stipulation where if you are working at a curent job for atleast a month and they FIRE you, but you quit the job previous to the new job you can collect but it is for only half the time. I believe the reason for this is because alot of people will leave a job they have invested years in to start a new job and then if that job lets them go, they dont have a job and its not always their fault. In NY it is hard to collect unemployment if you were not fired or layed off. However, if you leave one job and then go to the next job and quit that one too you can not collect because you were not fired. I dont know where you can get the info on this, however I had to collect when I was layed off for a month but had a job to return to after that (I worked in theater and they did not need me for the run of one show) and they explained all of this to me at that point. Im pretty sure though that if you google nys department of unemployment you will get the official site and find all of this info listed. Good luck.
voluntary quit does not make you eligible for unemployment benefits in NY
