How many employers discriminate on the basis of weight in hiring? |
I wonder if my weight could be keeping me from being hired. I have a master's degree, which is not that common in the jobs I am going for, so I wonder what the reason might be. They all discriminate..it stinks but from an employers standpoint they might look at things like rising healthcare costs and productivity over the long haul. And being female, that's another ding--crappy yes fair no. Also, are you over-qualified for the positions? I had that problem once. Try getting involved with women's groups (like NARALs etc) to branch out your network. Having that connection might prove fruitful. Another thing might be confidence on your interviews. If you're aware of anything it might subconsciously be showing straight through on the interview and you migh not be aware of it. I recommend reading Full Frontal Feminism...it was a great and quick read to get my self esteem back in check. It is not suppose to be but unfortunately everything is based on appearance (especially for women). everyone judges you by your weight-exspcially the skinny people. a friend of mine lost 100 lbs on crack-they weighed 100 pounds, now there fertalizer- be content with who you are and keep tryin- someone will hire you- be confident in who you are- a lack of confidence maybe why your not getting hired. have faith in people-you don't want to work for loosers which they are if they are judging you by your weight. over weight people die younger-look after you. I would say it depends on how much you weigh. Is it possible that your weight would prohibit you from doing you job? (i.e., heavy lifting, walking, etc.). Then I would say "NO". However, it would be hard for you to prove that this is the reason you were not hired. Depending on what state your in could also play a part in such an investigation. Most employers would probably look at someone who is over weight as a potential poor employee (as for attendance, health insurance, etc.). It also could be that you are over qualified for the positions you are looking for and a solution would be to find a placement agency that could better serve your pursuit of a carrer in which your education would benefit. Good Luck. It could be a factor, which is rediculous. In our field, it is RARE that we are overqualified, so you having a masters can only elevate you in the hiring status. Is this a teaching or performance job? Usually with teaching or academic music jobs, looks are secondary. But if we are placed in front of a big group of people on a consistent basis, unfortunately with the weight obsessive world that is progressing, you may not be hired. It is so beneath our standards in our community, because the classical field should be above that "pop" ideal when it comes to fairness and visuals. But obviously it is not. If you feel like going about asking why you didn't get hired, I would try it. If they don't like it, at least you will have an idea that you were probably right. If they had valid reasons for not hiring you, they will more than likely share this information with you without hesitation. Fellow musician & teacher Weight discrimination is one of those issues that no one will admit to doing and a lot of hiring managers do....humans tend to judge other by appearance, so even if they are not giving your weight as the reason for turning you down, chances are it played a part at a subconscious level. It is possible to be full-figured and still dress stylishly, so make sure you are dressing to best advantage - Lane Bryant or similar stores offer sales help to put together a professional wardrobe if you need it. It's also possible that your master's degree and experience level make you appear overqualified for the positions for which you're applying - you may want to emphasize your interest in the position during the interview. Of course you're well-prepared for the interviews, have researched the company, and ask thoughtful questions, right? If you are otherwise healthy and happy, don't let your body size and shape become a stumbling block for you. If you know you are overweight and unhealthy, let your career be one of the reasons to make a positive change. Good luck! :) |
