What is the minimum age of employment? |
What is the minimum age of employment in AB, Canada? Child labor legislation varies from province to province in Canada. The federal government does not employ youths under age 17 while school is in session. Most provinces prohibited children under age 15 or 16 from working without parental consent, at night, or in any hazardous employment. On July 15, the province of Alberta changed its employment standards to allow children age 12 to 14 to work in certain sectors for limited periods of time without a permit from the director of employment standards. In Alberta, a person between the ages of 12 and 14 may NOT work (1) for longer than 2 hours on a day during which the adolescent is required to attend school, (2) for longer than 8 hours on a day during which the adolescent is not required to attend school, (3) between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. A child between 12 and 14 may be employed without a permit from the Director of Employment Standards in any of the following occupations: delivery person of small wares for a retail store, clerk or messenger in an office, clerk in some retail stores, delivery person for the distribution of newspapers, flyers or handbills, or certain occupations in the restaurant and food services industry; however, there are special rules. The employment must not be or have any likelihood of being injurious to the life, health, education or welfare of the adolescent and the parent or guardian of the adolescent must give the prospective employer written consent to the employment. For persons 15 to 17, Employment Standards does not impose any restrictions on the type of employment. Some occupations and times of day have restrictions. If someone 15 to 17 works after 9:00 p.m. in (1) a place that sells food or drink, (2) in a retail store, (3) at a retail business selling gas or other petroleum or natural gas products, or (4) in a hotel or motel, the workers must be in the continuous presence of at least one other individual 18 years old or older. Between midnight and 6 a.m. young persons are not permitted to work in such businesses. Individuals 15 to 17 may work in other occupations after midnight only if the following conditions are met: (1) the young person's parent or guardian provides the employer with written consent to the employment, and (2) the young person must always be in the presence of at least one other individual 18 years old or older. 16 with the proper paperwork you get at your school. 18 is the best suited for a teen to look out for its future.. |
