I am considering getting my Juris Doctorate through an online instiution. Is this wise?

I'm in the military and constantly overseas, so it's really the only option. The problem is that I would only be able to practice in the State of California. Anyone out there with an online JD? Did you pass the Bar the first time? Are there discussion groups out there for this?

To practice in the State of California, you'd still have to pass the First Year Law Student's Examination (FYLSE), also known as the "Baby Bar" before you would even be eligible to take the California Bar Exam.

You also have to register with the State Bar as a law student, in your first year. Coincidentally, you can now register all of this online at the links below.

There is a Yahoo group for California Bar Exam takers. CA Bar Exam Primer, I think.

Here are the summary of requirements to take the bar exam.

I hope this helps. Please also note that you cannot work for JAG if you've gone to a non-ABA accredited law school. You may be able to work for the National Guard, though, if you want to stay in the military. Source(s): http://www.calbar.ca.gov/state/calbar/ca...

The criteria question is the program certified by the American Bar Association, if not do not waste your time or money...............
You could only practice in California because California is the only state that doesn't require its attorneys to have actually graduated from accredited law schools. Check to be sure the school is accredited. If not, it is a waste of your money.

California also has the hardest Bar Exam of all 50 states. I you want to practice there, you'd be better off saving the tuition and investing it. Once you are out of the military, use that money to take Bar/Bri and other Bar Exam courses.
I'm an attorney.
