Is it law? - Do I have to tell the boss why I must leave work early? It depends on the state. No state currently has a law obligating an employee to inform the boss of the personal reasons behind leaving work, but without providing them most states give the employer the authority to terminate you should you leave without providing a justifyable reason. I would think long and hard about why you are leaving early. Is it a want or a need? If it's a true need to leave early (such as a medical or legal issue) I would give a brief explination without giving any details you aren't comfortable sharing. "I have a doctor's appointment." is usually sufficient, if true, to get an employer to let you leave early. If the reason is not one that either endangers someones health or legally requires you to be there than I would not leave early. It's the subtle difference between want and need, and if you leave when you want then you may not only find yourself out of a job, but you may be disqualified for government benefits after your termination and find it more difficult to gain future employment. FYI, the top three reasons people are fired in today's society are for arriving to work late, leaving work early, and lollygagging on the job. But they can terminate your employment if this is a frequent occurrence. it's not law but it is manners to let them know why It would be a smart move. |
