What are jobs looking for when they do background checks?

do they just look for criminal

As someone said earlier, they look at criminal history, education, credit, and previous employers. Some companies and government agencies (especially the CIA and FBI) can also do checks into personal history.

Yes, an offer of employment can be rescinded if the results of the background check are not satisfactory or are not satisfactorily explained.
I used to work in a human resources office and when we did background checks we looked for:
- any criminal background
- educational history
- verification of previous employment

I also know that some companies check your credit history as well.
The person above is 100% correct and unfortunately if you weren't truthful on an application and your background check shows something once they recieve it, they can indeed deny you the position.
Take care.
