How long does it take for you to become a lawyer? |
Ok, so I want to be a lawyer [civil rights to be specific]. I have two questions. How long does it take after high school to become a lawyer?? Also, I know you have to go to college for 4 years, but then do you do have to go a university specifically for law? Thanks! In my state (Arkansas), as long as it takes to succesfully pass the bar exam. By the way I am THE ALL AMERICAN WANNABE JURIST!!!! Here you do not have to have any formal schooling. You just go take the test. If you pass you are a lawyer. I think you gotta go 4 years college and 3 years law school In order to be a lawyer, you have to attend four years at a regular university or college, and then attend a three year law school. So the total will be seven years. If you are currently in high school, I would talk to your guidance counselor to see different programs available in your area, and they also might help you get a job interning at a smaller law firm so you can see if you would like it. Your course of undergrad doesn't matter near as much as your grades, however, having political science classes as well as philosophy courses will help you "think like a lawyer." Good luck! i want to be a lowyer so that ican solve the problem of our community also the problems of others being a lawyer i want to prove all of that yes i want to go university to studies a law. I don't know, that is why I am asking! Dah!!! Yes, you do have additional "schooling" after college. Officially, you don't need any of that to be a lawyer--you have to pass a state's bar examination to be licensed to practice law in that state. Period. Now, it's unlikely you'll be able to pass the bar without college and law school (but I know of criminals in the pen who've taken and passed the bar--they have all the time in the world to study--seriously). And no firm, corporation, government is likely to hire someone who didn't graduate from law school much less college. You really can't get into law school without a minimum of a Bachelors (assuming we're talking USA---the discussion for foreign is different and somewhat complicated). It doesn't matter what you do in college--only your GPA, your LSAT scores (law school entrance exam), activities etc, similar to getting into college. There's no real prelaw major. there are no entrance requirements and poli sci DOES NOT make you think like a lawyer. In fact, poli sci majors are a dime a dozen, pick something that makes you stand out (but you still enjoy learning) like a science. Then there's 3 years of law school (unless you did a joint BA/JD program, which some schools have). That's where you learn to think like a lawyer. Then there's more studying --for the bar exam. THat's when you're officially a lawyer and can start working (although you should try to have a job lined up your 3rd year ebfore the bar). That's it. Also, if you want to do civil rights, there are volunteer ops at all levels of education. All kinds of internships--check around /ask your guidance counselor. |
