Can someone describe any personal or home-life ramifications of a law career?

I am unsure of what type of law to practice; does anyone have any information? Which are the most lucrative types and which ones take the most toll on the family (long office hours, etc.)?

Basically the most lucrative types take the most toll on the familly.

In larger corporations in the big cities, the ones where they are starting at $160K for new associates, they require upwards of 1800 BILLABLE hours per year. This means that you have to bill an average of 35 hours per week -- with no vacation. Each week of vacation increases the number of hours you must bill in previous weeks. And then add to that you also need to keep up on CLE's, probably have Pro bono requirements, and it generally takes 1.5 work hours to equal 1 billable hour -- you have long weeks ahead of you.

Likewise, you can live in a small town, don't specialize as much, charge reasonable rates, and have a much better home life.

Here is a link to the ABA site, and their career profiles -- you can see some examples at work.
