Is it legal for a man to take away your raise at a job just because you messed up one time?

My husband has been at this job for 3 months and recentally got a raise last week. They have been promising it for about a month. Anyways, today his boss told him he isn't getting the raise anymore because he messed up one time. This man has been nothing but mean to him since he has been there. My husband even passed out b/c they would not let him out to get a drink of water. (hes a welder) Im just trying to figure out what to do b/c out bills just keep getting further behind.

See a labor attorney

That is you best bet

I am a layer's daughter

Good Luck
From NYC in my own business too
I believe that an employer can pay anything they want to. They can increase or reduce your salary at will. It sounds like your husband should start looking for a new job- that sounds like a horrible place to work! And even if you do take the employer to court, I'm sure they'll be angry and make you're husband's life even more miserable.
IS HE IN A UNION? That is despicable! Seek Legal Aid Now!If he has been given a raise..he then therefore be demoted for not receiving it..I have seen this too many times..they are trying it on in my country now..This as8hole thinks he can get away with any thing..no water breaks..in a factory..welding..Act Now! I'm sorry,I would be tempted to take a torch to his eyeballs..I Hate,Loathe and Despise them and would rather die on my feet than on my knees...Sorry,Forget that, try and get support from his fellow workers and confront this Great Man..with a Govt. official........
It's legal for them to decrease his pay even if he hadn't messed up. His option would be to quit and get another job, if he's not OK with what he's being paid.

His passing out at work could be a health and safety issue, though.
Here are your husband's choices in this situation:

1) find a new job with better working conditions
2) figure out how to keep his boss happy and not "mess up"
3) join a union and work union jobs at scale

Getting a raise after only 3 months on the job is actually pretty quick; most employers only give raises after 6 - 12 months. The boss can indeed rescind a raise, as well as demote an employee, change the job description and/or title, and change the pay rate as s/he wishes.

Since this boss doesn't appear to be a real nice person, he may also just be trying to bully your husband into performing better. Or, the company could be having financial problems, the boss wasn't really authorized to give your husband a raise, or any one of a number of other things could be behind this.

If I were in your husband's shoes, I'd start looking for a new job with a better boss.
