Can a employer voluntarily hold my first check? |
and decide pay me for more than a two week period i started on 24of august and wont get paid til 14th Yes, that is very common for an employer to hold your first paycheck. I have worked in the past for companies that do this practice. I can't say whether it's legal where you live or not. It was where I lived. It doesn't make sense why they would do that. You should of got paid on the 31st of August for the one day when you started on the 24th. Ask for their check policy. GOOD LUCK! I guess it all depends on their payroll. I know that some places only pay on the 15th and 30th of each month. And if you start working within a week of the pay date, that they will pay you on the next pay period. It depends on where you live and what the company has stipulated as its pay periods. Pay periods must be posted in a public location (usually it's on a bulletin board near a timeclock or employee entrance.) Check the labor office for the state in which you live to get info on pay regulations. You can find the closest office through www.dol.gov. Good luck. Ask the employer when their paydays are - the 14th might be considered the day the checks go out. At my company, I get paid twice a month - on the fifth (for the period ending the last day of the previous month), and on the twentieth of the month (for the period from the first through the fifteenth). If one of those days falls on a weekend or holiday, I get paid the Friday immediately before the payday holiday. I'm not certain it's actually "held" -- you'll still get paid, you just have to fit into the schedule. They pay everyone "x" number of days after the last day worked in the pay period. If it's being "held" truthfully, then, no that is not legal. You have to be paid for the time worked. |
