What happens when the job you were hired for no longer exists?

I was hired to do a particular job, but it is clear that that no longer exists as other departments are doing the work that I was originally doing. What can I do?

Look busy. Act natural. Avoid managers.
Many companies do things like this. If you are good at what you do, they may transfer you to another department upon request. They may also ask you to take on additional duties that you were not previously doing before.

However, if your company is just taking away all your work, and hasn't said anything yet, I would start brushing up the resume, and start your job search now. It could be that they are planning on terminating you.

IF they do decide to terminate you, try to negotiate with them. Ask for a letter of reference from your superior. Try to get a severance package.

Good luck
Find a new job, either by creating one for yourself in yoru current company or looking elsewhere. It's obvious that the position you used to have no longer exists. the company is under no obligation to maintain a position that is no longer needed (this is why you don't see many elevator operators around any more.)
