I recently applied with LA County Probation. What are some pro's and con's of this job?

Pro: Great benefits (any government job usually does), including health, dental, life insurance and paid holidays (There are usually more County holidays than a private employer). Lots of opportunity for overtime because the probation department is usually understaffed (can't find enough qualified workers). You could make a difference in a criminal's life (maybe).

Con: You may be overworked. The Probation Department is always looking for additional workers. You'll have to deal with criminals (although obviously not horrible crimes like murder b/c those criminals couldn't get probation).
Pro: pretty much guaranteed employment (gotta really screw up to get fired).
Cons: well, that is the main problem - you're spending your day dealing with people you probably would not socilaize with otherwise. It's a bureaucracy; very hidbound by rules. Little chance for promotion. Pay is low and will never be great unless you get to regional manager (and that'll take years). The worst part is you'll see the beast from the inside and see how crappy and unjust the CJ system really is.
