Is it safe to be a police officer?

Im thinking of becoming a police officer, I was just wondering if it was a good job and if it is safe.

Depends what you mean by "safe". If assigned duties to sit behind the desk, that part would be mostly safe. However, traffic cops, vice squad, undercover cops, and detectives tend to have dangerous jobs (threat of concealed weapons or suspects resisting arrest), and SWAT team or police called to the scene of riots, even more dangerous. The TV show COPS shows some of the situations officers can get into. It is a good job though, an honorable job that pays well.
No its not safe!!! Its a good job but is dangerous.
It is an honorable profession, but safe it is not. You put your life on the line every time you go out, every time you answer a call for help. Now, police are under constant scrutiny, and every one of their decision are questioned. I would not want to be responsible for enforcing the law.
It depends on where you would think of serving as one. If the towns safe, you generally would be safe. If you were in say Detroit, then by god your life is at risk every single day. You have to be pretty brave to be a city cop(all cops are pretty brave though).
NO dude, if you dont get shot, you can probably count on a divorce, if you are married.
The pay is pretty decent sometimes, and you can climb the corporate ladder, but you are always in harms way.
consider the current situation, one honest police officer can not survive with peace.
It's a very honorable profession that's public serving and
very much a neccessity in our society. Safe ? -- life ain't
safe, and I guarantee that you're gonna die. There are
safer professions and there are more dangerous professions.
It's one aspect of many that is up to you to consider the
priority of.

Good luck in your selection.
