Is job hopping acceptable?

Some people may need more time by experiencing and trying out different things in order to unearth their potential. I have been in sales and marketing for about 10 years plus. Now beginning to doubt if i am suitable. Presently, I am staying at home without job for almost 2 months.

Yes, it is perfectly okay as long as the movement is upwards. Sounds like your career has been derailed.

A job hunt is just a job hunt until we come to that point in our lives where we want to set our feet upon a new path. When the traditional job hunt doesn't work very well at all. A life changing job hunt requires a different approach. You are contemplating a radical shift in direction.

Career planning is a deliberate process of knowing WHO we are so that we can be sure WHERE we want to go or WHAT we want to be at some defined point in the future. It involves an analysis of career/job options that are new to you. Career analysis is based on accurate, valid and timely information from --- reading, interviewing primary resources persons and direct observation of those persons while doing their job.

Here are some sites that can help you plan your career.

Job Hunters Bible - My favorite. I have taught their system to hundreds of people with great results. Richard N. Bolles, America's dean of Career Consultants, heads the company and is also the author of the book, 'What Color Is Your Parachute.' This book should be available in your public library.

Peace and every blessing
You can do it, but it can lead to problems down the road when you go for some jobs as they will view it that you are not comitted.
Job hopping is not only acceptable but necessary. Sometimes you stay in a job for abt 3-5 years, go to a different company and then come back to your old company at a much higher level. Changing 7 jobs in 6 years is not acceptable though.
These days 5 years commitment at a job is a lifetime. The only way to bring new perspectives to the job is having a wide background which can only be done with job hopping.

Conversely, the days of a company employing a good employee for 30 years (such as your dad at IBM) is long gone. We all pray the business won't be purchased and parcelled out to foriegn competition or some other entity.

Less than 3 years looks pretty bad and should be only mentioned for particular circumstances such as moving for various reasons (sick parent, joining loved one). Frankly, if you did job hop less than 3 years, try to fudge some months to make up the difference. Hence, why a good reference counts.
It depends on how often you job hop. If you stay with a company for a few years then leave that is acceptable. In today's society many corporations are starting off new employees off at a larger salary than the ones that have been with them for a while. So, sometimes it is necessary to earn what you are worth. However, if you are speaking of frequent hopping this is not good. The company you are applying to will look at why your resume lists so many different jobs in a short period of time and wonder if you were not a good fit with these organizations and question whether or not you would be a long term employee in their company.
