Is it acceptable to work a job that has nothing to do with your degree? |
After college I spent 2 years working in frustrating Advertising/Marketing jobs that were stressful and did not pay well. Now I work in an unrelated office job that pays well, is quite a bit less stressful and is in a great location. The job is not going to get me anywhere, but I was so unhappy in the other jobs, I would draft letters of resignation to cheer myself up. I guess I am using this time to figure out what the hell I want to do. I have a degree, and I'm very creative, but it's competitive and cutthroat, and I'm not up to it. Does this make my life wasteful? Not at all. When most people start college, they have no clue what they want to do. Once you finally decide on a major, take the courses pertinent to you, it takes almost 4 years (or more in most cases!) By then you are a different person, so you may not find the same things stimulating and enjoyable. I think that if you are happy working where you are for now, then work there. Later on down the road you may decide to give marketing another try, until then, live your life and don't worry about it! Good Luck! Of course and many, many people do it. Of course its okay! Its typically the only way people are able to work - is if they are working outside of their field. : > My brothers degree is in Constitional Law History -- he works part time at Joseph A. Banks Clothiers and for a legal firm as an assistant. Totally not in the plan - but he's happy! My degree is in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Now I'm being certified to be an American Sign Language interpreter. NOTHING to do with my degree - but its what I like : > Good luck! Hardly, a majority of people I know have jobs and careers in fields that don't relate to their degrees. I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're happy and financially stable. Stress can take it's toll. In your spare time, you should be making new contacts with people in your actual field and try volunteering for them for the experience. Chances are that you'll eventually get back to your roots and will feel more fulfilled. It's important to be happy. Many people get degrees and never spend a moment in a job related to their degree. What a degree should do for you is "open doors" and show that you can accomplish a task that requires a bit of time. For what it's worth, most people are never happy no matter what their job is. Pay your bills, take a vacation once in a while, and find your happiness outside of work. Personal career. Acceptable. To work a job that has nothing to do with degree or by far worser than the degree is worth is common in the world except for some developed countries. |
