At my job for 5 months...now? |
When i first started it, according to job description, this was going to be a Marketing position. After a month later, they moved the Marketing Director to another state, left me alone, and they didn't need a Marketing department here. Instead of letting me go, they offered me an assistant position which i am doing right now. I need a job that has something to do with my education, Marketing/Communications. I applied to places, my question is when they call me for an interview or ask me over the phone, you have been at your current job for 5 months, why do you want to leave there, what should i say? Job is not challenging enough? its not what i was promised? i would like to do something that is related to my degree? What do you think? you can start by telling them that you have a promising job right now, you are thankful for the experience you are gaining but you feel that your potential are not fully utilized and would like to explore the possibility of a job that would really harness your potential. just make sure you dont bad mouth your current employer; it's always a turn-off. just cite what i stated earlier - you feel you can fully utilize your potentials in their company. good luck! you can say, you started in a marketing position, but then they moved the mktg dept to another state and kept you on in another non-marketing position and you want to get back into marketing B honest. Being honest up front shows that you are a honest person. No one wants to hire a liar. Just tell them that you went to school for Marketing/Communications, got your degree and the job decided to move that position. Your current job asked you stay due to your work performance, so finding a job in your career field is not wrong. Just tell them that what you are currently doing at your present job is not your career goal. You actually explained your situation perfectly. You've outlined the reasoning perfectly, without speaking ill of your employer at all. When HR asks you why you are leaving after 5 months, tell them your story (professionally and without speaking ill of your employer) and you'll be fine. The fact that they offered you another role is a plus for you. It means they like you, in laymens terms. Haha. You may even want to denote your reason for leaving on your resume for that particular job. Companies may be turned off by the short tenure and not give you the chance to explain. I've seen it handled as follows and it works well: ABC Company (Company relocated marketing department in July) 2006 - 2007 Marketing Representative Good luck. I too am in a similar situation and I would just be honest. Explain to them that you feel your creativity and marketing skills are being wasted in a job that does not suit your career goals. This will let them know that you are enthusiastic about the opportunity to have a career and not to just collect a paycheck. |
