Does anyone have any tips on how to be a great sales person?

I am currently working in retail and of course I have to sell but I sell evening gowns, and dresses so it sells quickly. I am currently changing to a better paying job selling furniture, but I'm a little query about it. I'm actually scared I won't be good at it. The stuff is modern contempary, very nice stuff actually!! Does anyone have any tips? Thanks!

sales is about rapport and relating to your customer, if you are good at selling dresses you should in theory be good at furniture. BUT you must believe i what your selling and not just selling to sell. If you don't believe in it, they wont believe you
Here are a few I learned the hard way.
1. Master the product or service you are selling.
2. Fine tune your intuitive selling skills and techniques.
3. Be a people person. Constantly work on your social skills.
4. Approach every prospect as an opportunity to help someone. In other words, use a service approach when selling.
5. Update yourself continually.

Peace and blessings!

everything the above guy said, and READ READ READ about prospecting, referral circles, closing, and expanding your comfort zones, et al.
Zig Ziglar books are great, as are Stephan Covey (7 habits). Learn to "read" people. Listen more than you talk, and learn with the surgical use of questions. Get to that point, and they usually close themselves.

DON'T follow me around the store unless the boss demands it. Don't Ignore me when I walk up and stand nearby while you finish with another customer. (A quick "hello, I'll be with you in a moment" goes a LONG way toward whether I wait politely, or get my feelings hurt and blame you and the store for 'lousy service'".)
"window shopping" the local furniture stores (hoping my dream couch will appear in one of them) is a favorite activity of mine.
